Shogun FLEX – 44lbs of resistance in a portable package

Last updated on March 14th, 2024 at 12:04 pm

There is a 50% chance you showed up on my website for the first time because you wanted to learn more about cable attachments. It is fine, I’m happy to go down as the cable attachment dude. So when I get an opportunity to dig into some new cable attachment device you know I’m jumping for joy. The Shogun FLEX is what we are looking at today.

Currently my cable device selection includes my Inspire FT2, the Beyond Power Voltra I x 2, my new Exxentric kBox, and these two bad boys right here. Oddly enough, I was told I should check these out the DAY before Shogun reached out and asked me to take a look. Karma? Fate? I don’t know, but count me in!

Key Notes

The Shogun FLEX is a portable cable device that packs a punch with a nice app set-up. But is it enough? Are you trading portability for EVERYTHING else?

Transparency Note

Shogun was nice enough to send me TWO of their brand new Shogun FLEX units sake of review. As always, there is no commitment here other than for me to share my thoughts and help spread the word. So I’m excited to get to work on these and see if they are something I’ll keep and recommend, or send on their way and tell ya to skip!

Shogun FLEX Specs

I’ve shared before that I have myself, my wife, and my daughter using our gym equipment fairly regularly. One of the downsides of a garage gym, is the weather. I’m lucky that the cold isn’t often TOO cold in Northern California, but the heat can be pretty unbearable. 110 degree days mean 120+ in the garage with no way to escape the heat. Even early morning workouts can be in the 100s. Add in conflicts with soccer and other weekend activities and there is a real chance my wife skips a workout instead of choosing to pass out in the garage.

So the ability to have a cable machine to bring into the house, hook up in a doorway, and get in some curls, triceps, rows, you name it… sounds pretty appealing! You can attach two together and get a total of 88lbs of resistance, which SHOULD be enough for my wife on basically everything.

Pair this with the Booty Sprout, maybe the Exxentric kBox, and we’ve got a pretty well stocked gym that is portable and easy to use without many sacrifices. The units come with two main attachments for hooking them up. One is for a doorway, simply slide it into the door and get to work. The other is for either your foot or to be hooked to something like say a rack. So you have a few options to change the starting position from high to low and anywhere in between.

The app is fairly straightforward. You can use the Shogun FLEX devices individually or sync them so that they have the same settings with only one adjustment. You get a full library of exercise examples alongside actual workout programs. PLUS Shogun FLEX units can be adjusted for eccentric or concentric overload. Pretty awesome adjustments for making things a little spicier.

Things I’m Looking For in the Shogun FLEX

I want to be able to use the Shogun FLEX in the garage on a regular basis. I’m looking to perform a bunch of different cable style exercises on it. I also want to include this in the house. My wife trains Friday, Saturday, Sundays. We often have sports games on Saturdays or other conflicts on the weekends in the mornings. So as I mentioned, being able to bring this inside is a winner. Maybe it could even hook up to some of the other machines I have and make for some unique combos.

This would give her full access to everything she needs to perform a valid workout in the air conditioned comfort of our house.

I also would like to see how this works with my daughter Audrey. Is it easy enough for a child to get the grasp of how it works, and be able to use the app effectively. Overall, how does this feel, how does it perform, are we getting a true cable machine in a portable package, or an expensive knock off?

Other Options On The Market

Smart devices are picking up steam including the Beyond Power Voltra I. These are portable, take up minimal space, allow you to train movements in various ways, without dedicating space to a massive cable tower. There are even some Amazon options popping up, so keep an eye on this realm of fitness gadgets if it peaks your interest.
