The Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2

Last updated on April 16th, 2024 at 10:11 am

I get a monthly recap of my most read articles. Cable Attachments, and then anything posterior chain related are always at the top of the list. So here I am, adding ANOTHER posterior chain device to the Review Pipeline with the Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2.

For a quick primer, I’ve reviewed the Booty Sprout, the HOIST Back Extension, the Freak Athlete Nordic Hyper GHD, are working on the Shogun NORD-EX… so I guess I’m “that guy” now. So obviously I needed to get the Big 3 together all at one time to get after it. Hence why the Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2 is now in my garage.

My goal is to do an individual review on this, the NORD-EX, and then compare all three of the big boys side-by-side-by-side in a showdown so you know whether you are a budget shopper or looking for the best, you can grab the right unit for YOU.

Key Notes

The Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2 is the lowest cost of the three main options on the market for a Nordic/Back Ext combo. Will that translate into a solid purchase or a bad buy? Let’s find out!

Transparency Note

Tib Bar Guy was nice enough to send me the Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2 for sake of review. This is a V2 of their original design, I did not test out the V1. Tib Bar Guy has provided an affiliate link for us, so if you use it it will help me continue to do more cool stuff in my garage. As always, I hope I can provide a clear and detailed review so you know what to do for YOUR home gym.

Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2 Specs

As I mentioned, this will be far from the first posterior chain machine added to the garage, but it definitely has an argument for the most budget option that still does more than one thing.

Assembly

The unit gets shipped in one big box, and is more or less the same as MOST gym equipment. Packed tight, foam inserts, you name it. One thing that was glaringly different between this and the Shogun, and even the Freak Athlete, is the attention to detail on some of the smaller details.

The Shogun NORD-EX comes with the most beautiful included tools I’ve ever seen, so much so that I kept them for a set in the garage. The Freak Athlete tools were very OK. The Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2 came with NO tools.

No wrenches, no hex wrenches, nothing. On top of that, the Shogun pieces come in these clearly marked bags. The Freak Athlete was more normal and you had to kind of work your way through install. The Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2 came in a big bag of randomly assorted nuts, bolts, and washers. The bag was greasy, and by the time I was done assembling, I needed some soap and water.

Now I’ve been mixed over the years on included tools. On one hand, you pay for them. And I already have a full set of wrenches, allen wrenches, an Impact Gun, multiple attachments, you name it. So I don’t need any of that. Considering that the Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2 is aiming to be the budget option of the three, I think the no tools is appropriate. Just an interesting note that it comes with NOTHING. And the bag of parts that was dirty was less than ideal.

The install process was fairly straightforward. The blown out schematic was easy for me to follow, and the only hiccup I made was I originally attached the top back extension pad backwards. Easy fix, and totally my fault for not looking at the orientation.

What Else

The Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2 is the TALLER/LONGER of the three, but also the thinnest. So there are some potential drawbacks or benefits there depending on your space. The unit takes some obvious influences from both the Shogun and the Freak Athlete models, as they attempt to upgrade their V1 to compete with the competition.

Things I’m Looking For in the Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2

I love my Freak Athlete Nordic Hyper GHD. It isn’t perfect, but cramming a lot into a small package requires some tradeoffs. The Shogun NORD-Ex is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL piece of gym equipment that hits every check mark aesthetically. The Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2 needs to be able to compete with these at a budget price. Being cheaper is great, but will it be CHEAPER? I can take some twists and turns, some cut corners, and accept the $200 price cut comes from somewhere. But it can’t be the basic functionality of the unit.

So, will I be pleasantly surprised by the lower cost and tradeoffs, or have a hard time swallowing those details. We shall see!

Other Options On The Market

The obvious one is the Freak Athlete Nordic Hyper GHD. This has been our go to for several months.

The Shogun Nord-EX

The next obvious one is the Shogun Nord-EX. This is the most expensive and premium offering between the main offerings out there.

BaseBlock The Nordic Plus

Looking for something a little more streamlined and simple? The BaseBlock Nordic Plus can do regression style Nordic Curls, as well as 45 degree Back Extensions. It is also the CHEAPEST option of them all. Even cheaper than the Tib Bar Guy Nordic Back Extension Machine V2.
