Ironmaster Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells Overview

Ironmaster has been around the home gym game for YEARS. And there is a reason for that. Their designs are solid, their ecosystems continue to evolve, and they focus on consistently on providing equipment that is going to be handed down across the generations. You won’t find them chasing the newest trend. This can, of course, be a good or bad thing. While their equipment is rock solid and continues to work, it also can move from the best in the business to a historical reference point.

The Ironmaster Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells were one of the only offerings on the market for years that went heavy enough, were solid enough, and looked enough like dumbbells for the serious home gym enthusiast to give them a look. They were the only set of adjustable dumbbells I ever even considered for years compared

Over the years more and more companies have created similar products. You have Powerblock dumbbells, an insane amount of Amazon options, Nuobells, loadable dumbbells, and more. Pepin now makes one of the few I would personally take a look at to compete with the Ironmasters. Ultimately you need to look at your goals with dumbbells, how you use them, your budget, your space, and make a decision. There is no one size fits all answer for the home gym.

Ironmaster Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells Features

The Ironmaster Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells are based on an old HOIST Adjustable Dumbbell design, but they reinvented it and improved on it. The current design leverages a couple key components. First is the handle. You have the knurled shaft for your hands, as well as the chrome frame where the plates stack up against. Unloaded this weighs roughly 5lbs. You add your plates of choice to each side that stack up like books against the handles. Each plate has some indentations so they sit INSIDE each other, so you don’t have just the pressure pushing them together.

And last, the key piece to the puzzle, are the screw pins. These slide in, and then twist to lock in place. They put pressure on the plates, into the handles, and lock in via the grooves, and you are ready to rock. If you compare the Ironmaster Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells to some of the newer adjustable dumbbells on the market, it is like comparing analog to digital. There is a bit more manual effort to put together the Ironmasters vs the sets that have a built in dock and locking mechanism. The time this takes is going to be based on your gym, workouts, and more.

A few of the reasons why the Ironmaster Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells design hasn’t changed in over a decade, is because they are rock solid. All metal handles, fully metal machined interlocking plates, with a full metal end cap screw. No plastic knobs, adjustments, springs, or locking mechanisms here. The only way for this to fail is for a weld to bust, or honestly, user error. If you manage to not lock the handles correctly. Otherwise, this is a fail safe concept.

The fact the Ironmaster Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells can go up to 165lbs, makes them one of the few dumbbells potentially capable of being your EVERYTHING dumbbell, even for heavy sets of rows. Compare them to the other offerings that typically cap off at 100lbs, and for the bigger lifters out there, they provide something different.

Ironmaster also offers a number of integrations with their dumbbell plates, including being able to load up the Ironmaster Super Bench Pro V2 Leg Developer, an ez curl bar, their smith machine, and more. So if you are looking to build an ecosystem of a home gym, from one company, Ironmaster is probably the answer you are looking for.

Storage & Mobility

The set of Ironmaster Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells I borrowed from my neighbor came with their basic stand. This is a decent option for those who do not plan to move them around at all. In my experience though, having a stand with wheels is a HUGE quality of life upgrade. It makes it easier to move to your bench, or platform, or wherever you need them. It also means you can clean under and around them much easier. And if you decide to reorganize the gym at all, wheels make that EXPONENTIALLY easier.

Ironmaster does offer a number of PRO stands with wheels, but they are pretty pricey. I’ll be doing some research as we go on possible third party offerings. So my stance right now is… YES, get a stand. YES, get a stand with wheels (unless if you plan to NEVER move them), but NO, do not buy from Ironmaster. Stay tuned for the final verdict here.

What I’m Looking For In The Ironmaster Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells

I really enjoyed my original time with the Ironmaster Quick-Lock Adjustable Dumbbells the first time around. I moved from a couple random dumbbells and a pair of olympic handles, to these, and it was night and day. The downsides really started to show when my wife needed to use them, if we ever needed to super set, drop set, or even share dumbbells amongst multiple lifters at the same time.

With how fast some of the adjustable dumbbells on the market today work, and with how much better storage has gotten for individual pairings of dumbbells, my question is whether these still make sense today, or not. Are they a relic of the past, or are they a perfect design that needs no upgrades?

We’ll be putting them to use against a number of the best dumbbells on the market, including dedicated dumbbells and adjustables, to see what we learn and where we land. I think these still have a place in the discussion, I just think it probably only works for a smaller audience with a certain style of lifting.
