Preacher Curls are an exercise that I have both LOVED, and HATED in my nearly two decades of lifting. I figured it out after handling half a dozen options in my garage at one time… Some just suck. The angles are wrong, you are missing key pieces to a good set-up, poor padding, and more can take an otherwise awesome exercise and make it gather dust. Lucky for you, I’ve used almost every single one of them, and I’m going to share my thoughts here today so you can grab the right Preacher Curl for YOUR Home Gym.
Key note, I am looking at Preacher Curl attachments for benches, not necessarily stand alone preacher curl machines. As cool as preachers are, dedicating floor space to a single machine that does ONE thing, is a little whacky in anything but the biggest of home gyms. So these are going to be bench attachments.

The Best BUDGET Preacher Curl Attachment
The AbMat Preacher Pad is a pretty nifty solution to preacher curls for home gyms. Use with any bench, in a number of fashions.
Why Preacher Curls?
Preacher curls are a staple in a lot of bodybuilding worlds. The reason is because they put your biceps into a pretty gnarly stretch position, while still allowing a solid amount of weight to be used. More weight, more range of motion, with a bigger stretch, is almost guaranteed to be a winner for hypertrophy. Preacher Curls made Jeff Nippard’s list of Best Biceps exercises, and we’ve seen Jay Cutler, Arnold, and others use them to build the biceps of Olympia Champions.
Keep in mind, that the same things that make Preacher Curls awesome, also make them a particularly questionable exercise. You need to be smart here and use a steady progression and impeccable form. Jumping in too fast, with too heavy of a weight, is a recipe for a torn bicep. Consider using a quality EZ-Curl Bar to take some of the stress off the bicep tendon as well, and make sure to work your way into the stretch.
John Meadows was a big fan of preacher curls, but typically programmed them at the end of his routine, when his biceps were already warmed up and a little fatigued. This ensures they are ready for work, but also that they won’t be handling the maximum amount of weight possible. So we get the benefits, while minimizing the drawbacks.
Do You Need A Preacher Curl?
Absolutely not. Biceps can be trained in a LOT of very easy fashions, even in a home gym. If you have a barbell and a set of dumbbells, you probably have a dozen options right there. Add in cable attachments and you’ve got more options than you could ever need. BUT, if this is a favorite exercise of yours, or you are trying to maximize your time spent, this might be a worthy investment. For powerlifters, probably not. For strongmen, you could argue that training preacher curls might help prevent bicep tears when done correctly, so it could be a helpful addition. For bodybuilders and physique focused athletes, this might be a high priority on your list.
The BEST Preacher Curl Attachments
We did a round up of the best adjustable benches (with attachments) recently, and I think you have to highly consider the bench itself, as well as the preacher curl attachment. Unfortunately, mixing and matching attachments isn’t going to work very well between benches.
Prime Shorty Adjustable Bench w/ Preacher Curl Attachment

The Prime Shorty with the preacher curl attachment alongside their cradle is the BEST set-up I’ve used at home for preacher curls, and it isn’t even close. Not only do we get the ability to do dumbbells and barbells with the cradle, but I was able to pretty easily rig up my VOLTRAs for preacher curls as well. That was so freaking good, I could honestly own that combo just for that exercise. Best biceps pump I might have ever had in my entire life.
In typical Prime fashion, they nailed every aspect. The angles are perfect, the padding is on point, you have adjustments for multiple sized athletes, and you can use all kinds of fun stuff. Their SMART Arm system is another step up, but requires some additional investment and consideration into space requirements.
Ironmaster Super Bench Pro V2

The Ironmaster preacher curl has a couple of really nice options, mostly around the angle adjustments. This lets you get a different angle based on your athletes size and shape. I was able to get creative and use some cable stuff here, but it wasn’t nearly as nice as the Prime. The Ironmaster set-up is solid, old school, and works. But it definitely isn’t at the same level as the Prime.
Bells of Steel Buzzsaw

Bells of Steel uses the same functionality as the Powertec Levergym Preacher Curl attachment. The cool thing here is that you can swap out handles and use whatever you want. The downside here, is that it is very unstable, and has some glaring flaws in the implementation.
Wide Body Bench

The one I wanted to like more than any other, was the Wide Body Bench. Promising to be a full machine replacement. I struggled to fit in it correctly, and felt like I was forced to a very awkward movement pattern. If you are the right size, this thing could be bonkers. But it just didn’t hit right in our gym.
Quick note – Wide Body is now offering a V2 of their bench and attachments. Our experience was with their V1.
Freak Athlete ABX
Freak Athlete dropped the ABX and then before finishing their pre-order, added on the Biceps Attachment. We’ve been putting it through the paces for a few months and have some mixed feelings. It is probably the best option behind the Prime Shorty, but the gap between first and second is miles.
AbMat Preacher Pad

This one comes from the mind of my dude Adam at Garage Gym Lab. It is a very simple concept… get our arms into the position of a preacher curl, without owning any piece that is tied to a specific ecosystem. As in, we can use the preacher pad with ANY bench or creative solution we might have.
Wrap Up
A good Leg Developer is an absolute requirement in my gym, and should probably be the first consideration when choosing a bench. But a solid curl option might be right behind it. Prime certainly is the front runner here, but with their bench lacking in a few areas, there is some wiggle room for others to sneak in and compete.
