Landmines are a staple in most home gyms as they can add a ton of different exercises to your routine with equipment you already own. They come in a number of different shapes, sizes, builds, and budgets, so choosing the right one for YOUR gym is important.
Over the past decade I’ve owned half a dozen different ones, which were all the right choice for that particular version of my gym. Whether I had limited space or an open floor plan, needed to move around or handle a lot of weight. Today I walk through landmines, help you understand the pros and cons of each kind, and ultimately what landmine you should snag. You might even be able to use a free alternative.

The REP x KlevaBuilt Adroit was sent to me for free from REP Fitness for sake of providing a review. All of the others I have used over the years I purchased out of pocket at one time or another.
Most of the links in today’s article are affiliate links, which give me a kick back and cost you nothing, helping me to keep making articles just like this one and do my thing throughout the home gym community.
Obviously, my hope is that none of that impacts my judgement and feedback, but keep all of that in mind as we go. I appreciate your support, let’s dig in.
Quick Landmine Recommendations
There is more to this conversation, but if you just want to grab something real quick, here are my best recommendations for a GREAT Landmine For Your Home Gym.

The Best Premium Landmine
The REP x KLEVA ADROIT is without a doubt the best landmine I have used in my decade of home gym ownership. It has handled 4x45s without flinching, rotational work, pressing, and more.
And it looks FANTASTIC while doing it. It has every feature a premium landmine could have.

The BEST Budget Landmine – Mobile
The AbMat Barbell Bomb is a VERY mobile friendly option for landmine work. Toss it in your gym bag, take it outside, set it up ANYWHERE in your gym, at a fantastic price.

The BEST Budget Landmine – Rack Attached
The LIONSCOOL Rack Attached Landmine is a STUPIDLY low price, found on Amazon, and comes with a number of premium features that should be far outside of this price range.
Landmine FAQ

Do I Need a Landmine For My Home Gym?
Maybe. You can perform a lot of the same exercises with other equipment, or with some creative DIY solutions, without spending additional money. But a landmine can perform certain tasks BETTER with less set-up. So it boils down to your personal gym and programming needs.
What Exercises Can You Do With A Landmine?
You can do a lot of Rotational and Anti-Rotational exercises, squats or deadlift options, pressing variations, and a lot of back/rowing options.
Are Rack Attached or Free-Standing Landmines Better?
Both have pros and cons. Rack Attached are more stable, take less set-up, but are in the way and can only be used with a rack. Free-Standing are more mobile so they can be used anywhere, but move around in use, and require additional steps for set-up.
Should I Buy Attachments For My Landmine?
I don’t think the majority of them are worth the cost. A quick hack of using a strap or collar and attaching cable attachments works better.
Landmine Overview

Landmines come in a number of shapes and sizes but ultimately their purpose is to be able to drop a barbell into, to give you a pivot point, with a loadable sleeve on the other end. They are kind of like a hybrid between a machine and a free weight movement giving you some stability but still plenty of free range of motion.
They can be used for a LOT of different exercises, some better than others.

You can do a lot of Rotational and Anti-Rotational stuff for your core, even hit legs with squats or deadlift options. You can do a lot of pressing variations, from kneeling to standing, one arm and two arm, overhead or even in a chest press fashion. Because you are pressing out in front of you, compared to a fully overhead position, this is often much more shoulder and joint friendly, especially for those with limited range of motion.
And my favorite and primary use of a landmine, is for row variations. Meadows rows, 1 arm rows, and T-Bar row variations are a staple in my back days. While I like dumbbell rows, owning dumbbells heavy enough for my needs is a little difficult.
Rack Attached Landmines vs Free-Standing

There are two primary modes in which a landmine will create a pivot point. Either by attaching to a rack, like my REP X Kleva ADROIT. Or by means of a more Free Standing option.
The free-standing options come in a number of form factors. The Gut Wrench I had, which is now the AbMat Barbell Bomb, is just a counterweight mechanism that lets the bar sit and rotate. Others like the REP x Kleva ADROIT Post Landmine, sit inside a stack of plates to keep it in place. And then some have a base they rotate off of.
The benefit to a free-standing option is that they aren’t in the way on your rack, and they can go anywhere. If you have a tight space to work with, or want to take it outside, or to the gym in your bag, these can do that. The downside, is that physics doesn’t really care about your gains. If you are doing more explosive movements or loading it up heavy, the free-standing options are more likely to move around.

The benefit to a rack attached option, is it is more stable. Your rack is going to do the work needed to hold it down. The downsides to a rack attached option, is it can only be used in and around a rack, so you can’t take it to an open spot in the gym. If you have equipment in the way of the ideal place, too bad. They are also sometimes in the way on your rack. If you use your rack as often as we do for additional attachments, that can be annoying.
And you are going to need to buy the right size for your rack including upright size and hardware size.
Other Specs and Features

There are some other specs and features that separate a budget option from a premium option that we should discuss.
The ADROIT has a fully lined inner tube that protects your barbell from metal-on-metal contact. A more budget option will have your barbell slide right into the metal tube with no protection. I will note, that if you own iron plates, you essentially do this every time you load and unload your bar. So, it might not be something to lose sleep over.
A budget landmine will likely rotate on a combination of nuts and bolts to achieve movement in multiple axes. Where as the ADROIT rotates on a full 360 degree axis from the ball joint, which means we aren’t ever going to hit an angle where it just locks up on us.

A budget landmine is likely going to be bolted onto your rack with typical hardware. And it’ll typically be free floating, meaning it is really in the way when not in use. The ADROIT has a completely tool-free assembly which is done with full plastic protection everywhere.
This means we don’t have any metal on metal that is going to chew up our pretty powder coating. And it means we can take this off the rack in a matter of a few seconds with just your hands and get it out of the way. And for basic storage, it even has this nifty magnetic rack pin.
Landmine Attachments
Since landmines can do so much, they have added a plethora of attachments over the years to help expand them even further.
But I’d actually recommend you take a DIY approach and use some kind of strap, wrap, or collar and pair it with your favorite cable attachment so you don’t need to own landmine specific pieces.
The one attachment I would consider looking at, is the FigJammer from Black Widow. Since it uses 1” and 5/8” holes, you can snag anything from Mutant Metals or Rorman Strength to tinker with your handle game, or do what Mr FigJam himself does with two rollers and turn this into a hack squat variation.
If something like a Viking Press is going to be a staple in your routine as a Strongman competitor, or you need that hack squat in your life, Black Widow makes the best options that I have seen.
Don’t Buy A Landmine… Do This Instead

We went this far and now I’m going to show you a couple of options for landmine style work that won’t require any extra money out of pocket.
The most old school DIY hack is shoving a barbell in any free corner of your gym. The problem here is typically that it can damage your walls. The quick fix is to use a shoe, a baseball glove, any soft material that can provide a little barrier between the bar and wall.
While that works, my go-to for a truly free alternative, is to simply use an extra 45lb plate and a collar. This creates a pivot point ready for some basic landmine exercises. If you want to do exercises that are higher off the ground than row variations, you can move the plate further down the barbell sleeve and use two collars to keep it on there.
Which Landmine Should You Buy?

My personal primary use for a landmine, is row variations. I could VERY easily use my plate trick, even up to some heavy 1 arm row variations, and not have any issues. This would be my go-to recommendation for you to start with to see if landmine work is going to stick around in your workouts and whether you need a more dedicated piece, or not.
If you already know you like landmine movements and want to level up a little, first you need to decide if you want rack attached or a more mobile option.
I would take Rack Attached as my Plan A, as it is more secure, takes less set up, and should overall be a better experience, but if your space or training needs require a more mobile solution, then consider that a solid Plan B.

If you want the best option out there, rack attached or mobile, I have zero qualms recommending the REP x Kleva Adroit Landmine as the ultimate option. It has the smoothest movement, most barbell protection, has handled heavy work, rotational work, pressing movements, and everything I’ve tossed at it without even a flinch.
If the flashy stuff of the Adroit doesn’t matter to you, for about 1/3 of the price, the AbMat Barbell Bomb is a great mobile option. And I’d grab the LIONSCOOL for a budget rack attached option which has a lot of the same features as the ADROIT.

Keep in mind that the ADROIT costs $140 and the other options from REP, Rogue, and a number of the other big home gym companies come in around $100. I’d hard pass on those and either go budget, or step it up to the KLEVA.
Wrap Up
Over the past decade I’ve owned landmines from Rogue, REP, Amazon, some DIY options, and more. They have been rack attached, mobile friendly, cost $150, or absolutely nothing. All of them worked, some better than others, but I bought the option at the time that worked best for my gym and my needs.
Hopefully today you’ve learned the pros and cons of each and determined what the right Landmine for YOUR home gym should be.

Hi Joe,
Love the landmine, I’ve used it for years. I enjoyed this article and will share it with my sister. I have 2 in my garage gym—one mountable at any height and one attached to my rack for versatility. I got handles for the landmine, but like the idea of using cable attachments. I’ll try some of those tips.
Thanks Joe
P.S. Tell Audrey I love her Ninja set-up😊
