Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun Review – 2024

Last updated on December 19th, 2024 at 02:39 pm

I finish every single night with a massage gun run down. Well, maybe not EVERY single night. But out of 365 days, I’m probably clocking in at over 330 of em finishing with a massage gun. My current go-to is the Bob and Brad D6 Pro Massage Gun, as I’m a bigger dude and this thing has some power behind it. But recently Bob and Brad reached out with an opportunity to test out an unreleased product and I said “YES PLEASE!” Let’s look at the Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun.

Key Notes

The Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun is a quality massage gun for all but the biggest and thickest of dudes. Consider this the medium in the Goldilocks of Massage Guns.

Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun Review

Transparency Note

I actually got this unit sent to me for free. Thanks Bob and Brad! This is my fourth Bob and Brad massage gun to date, so I’m starting to become a bit of an expert I guess in what they offer and which one to choose for the right person. I received it in early June of 2024.

You can check out the other Bob and Brad Massage Gun reviews here:

As I already reviewed the X6 Pro, and this is the X6 Pro Max, let me clarify the difference. Bob and Brad added a new Hot and Cold therapy attachment head to the lineup. This review will be almost identical to the X6 Pro, with the addition of the new attachment and updated pictures for the different case.

Overview of the Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun

The Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun has 5 speeds, comes with 6 different heads, and has a built in battery in the handle.

BobAndBradX6ProMax GunandCase

The unit has a brushless motor. I spent more money on power tools in 2023 than gym equipment, and in my research I learned that brushless is often better. It means it stays quieter, produces less heat, and should last longer with better performance.

The max speed for the Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun is 3200rpm, and it has a 10 minute auto-off built in feature. More than once I have had it shut off on me mid session. Luckily it is a quick few button presses and we are back in business, but I haven’t found a situation where my massage gun will turn on by itself on my bedside table and I need it to turn off after 10 minutes automatically.

Bob and Brad claim this is to avoid overheating. But we know that if it auto shuts off, we are just gonna turn it back on. So this feature is a little “meh” in my experience.

Charging

Unfortunately, the Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun uses a dedicated wall charger. The D6 and C2 both charge via USB-C, which in my household has basically become the only cable we use.

The nice part about a dedicated charging piece is you get consistent charging speeds, but I’d take the USB C if I had a choice.

Initial Thoughts Of The Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun

I think massage guns are an easy way to get some soft tissue work in for strength athletes. The main reason is because MOST of us have some down time. We relax, watch some TV, otherwise just chill before bed. This is a fantastic time to sneak in your massage gun and give those muscles a little bit of relief. To achieve that, assuming you aren’t watching your TV on full volume, you need a quiet massage gun.

In the C2 review, I noted how quite the unit was. The website claims it runs at 60dB… while the Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun claims to run at 55dB. This seems like a mistype, because the X6 is definitely bigger and louder. Not by a ton, but noticeably louder. Still quieter than the big boy D6, which is loud enough that my wife and I can’t talk in the same room while it is going. But it isn’t exactly, sneak it into the room and no one notices quiet.

For reference, according to Decibel Pro, “60 decibels is as loud as a normal conversation between two people sitting at a distance of about one meter (3 ÂĽ feet)“.

Battery

The battery on this thing is pretty fantastic. You can easily expect to get a full month on one charge, even with a pretty robust daily massage routine. This was the same on the C2, which makes sense, because I believe other than the charging option, these are essentially the same batteries.

Just like with the C2, the battery is integrated into the body of the massage gun. So we don’t have extra moving pieces like I had with my Hyperice HyperVolt.

The Case

The Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun comes with a nice carrying case that holds all the goodies, including the 6 massage head attachments, the gun itself, two replacement o-rings for the attachments, the charging piece and the instruction manual.

BobAndBradX6ProMax FullCase

The case for the Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun is a little larger than the C2 case in every fashion. Now, it isn’t so much that it isn’t portable, but it is enough that the C2 is BY FAR the choice for travel purposes. Could you fit the Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun in a travel bag, gym bag, etc? Definitely! And if you have a favorite attachment you could simply take the entire thing out and travel with JUST the massage gun and one attachment. But the C2 is still the easier case to travel with.

X6 vs C2 Cases

I mentioned in the C2 review that the case is awesome. It even held all of the pieces in place upside down! That is not the same for the Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun. For whatever reason, the case is a little less FIRM. The gun itself does not stay put.

Even a slight jiggle loosens most of the attachments with a couple falling out just by opening the case. The Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun has the same bungee style net as the C2 case, which I didn’t love. The net is used to keep the pamphlet and extras in place. This should be a snap ring, zipper, Velcro, something that actually KEEPS them in place.

The Attachments

BobAndBradX6ProMax Attachments

The Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun comes with 6 different attachments. Four of them are a hard plastic base with varying tips to achieve a different massage for different areas of the body. The fifth is a metal stopper piece. And the 6th is the new MAX feature, the Hot/Cold Therapy attachment.

After doing a little research, you find out that the reason for the metal is that you can apply heat, cold, or even essential oils or other treatments that wouldn’t be doable with plastic, directly to the head itself. Since metal retains temperature, this “works”. Obviously the idea behind the hot/cold therapy attachment is that you don’t have to do that, and have it built right into the piece.

In my experience with massage guns so far… I pick one attachment and use it for everything. You might like a different attachment than me. All good, I still love you. But I am consistently picking ONE attachment, and never trading it out. I will say that my wife likes a different attachment than me. And if I’m going to use the massage gun on my wife, I’ll likely use multiple attachments. But on myself, I pick the narstiest one and get to work.

Hot And Cold Experiences

With the X6 Pro, I gravitated to using the metal plunger piece. This is still my go to favorite attachment for the Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun. I tried using it with cold and hot applications, but it doesn’t work very well for me. You need to get your water really hot and place the piece in there, retrieve it without burning yourself, screw it into the massage gun, and then get to work.

It needs to retain heat long enough that it actually does something. Apply the same logic for cold, and I think you can see that this isn’t very practical. In a similar fashion, if I was going to apply some essential oils or maybe bioforce to a sore area, I’d just do that manually. I’m not sure blasting it into my leg is going to do anything beneficial.

So I like the metal attachment because it is nice and firm, but the other “benefits” are marketing mumbo jumbo in my experience.

BobAndBradX6ProMax HotCold
Applying the HOTTEST setting, directly to my forehead

The Hot/Cold therapy attachment itself is… meh. Let me explain why. The cold piece has two levels of cold. One being low, the other being high (for ease of explanation). The high setting is definitely refreshingly cold to the touch, at first. Your body heat very quickly takes over and it can’t keep up. So it becomes a slightly cool massage at best. Ice Baths need to be below 60 degrees to be efficient, to cool down your entire body. Even after a full body massage with this, I don’t feel any cooler than when I started.

Then there is the problem of time. Think about if you were to ice a sore shoulder, elbow, or leg. You’d wrap it with ice packs, and leave them there in place for a few minutes. The RICE method calls for 15-20 minutes of cold compression every couple hours. Are you going to keep the cold massage head on that one area for 15 minutes straight? Probably not.

The heat has similar issues on the Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun. It is definitely warmer than a standard massage attachment. You can tell it has heat. But that heat, even on the high setting, is pretty low. I would liken it to some warmed up massage oils.

Not much makes someone jump than expecting a warm embrace and getting poked with a cold metal massage head. But this isn’t exactly the same thing as wrapping a sore muscle in a hot pack, taking a dip in a hot tub, or even taking a warm shower.

One more hiccup to the Hot/Cold therapy attachment, is that it has its own battery that needs to be charged via USB-C. So the massage gun and the attachment with it, charge in two different fashions. You get a cable for it, but no charging piece. Feels a little clunky.

BobAndBradX6ProMax HotColdCharging

Would I complain that this attachment comes with my massage gun? No. Would I find a use for it occasionally when massaging my wife? Yep! Would I go out of my way to find a massage gun that comes with this feature and pay extra money for it? Not at all.

One More Thought Here

The above is my experience. I wanted to get my wife’s experience as well, so we tinkered with the hot and cold head for a bit in a few fashions. As part of a massage gun, she agreed, it didn’t seem to do anything noticeable. Is it there? Sure. But is it accomplishing anything? No.

BUT! My wife isn’t anywhere near as dense as I am, so the hot and cold had a bigger impact on her when applied on its own. Meaning that, if I was to use the massage head in my hand, or as part of the massage gun without turning it on, I could apply some hot and cold therapy to a specific area fairly conveniently. So while it doesn’t seem to work very well as a part of a massage gun, it can be used as a massage tool, or you know, get creative and use it in some other fashion for your partner… wink wink!

Performance of The Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun

The biggest thing for me, is that I am 6ft 250+lbs. After nearly two decades of foam rolling, lacrosse balling, and other various forms of muscle relief, I mostly have hard tissue, not soft tissue. So a massage gun can mostly be as brutal as it wants to be, and I am good.

As I noted in the C2 review, it was a little light for my tastes for an every day massage gun. Great for travel, but otherwise it was missing a little gusto. The Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun picked up the slack. But my D6 is still going to be my go-to massage gun for my own personal use.

Now the X6 is actually, even on the lowest setting, too much for my wife to use. She HATES foam rolling, and can tolerate a light massage from me, but otherwise has not been desensitized like myself. So the Bob and Brad X6 Pro Max Massage Gun isn’t a good choice for her. The C2 is solid!

Which Bob and Brad Massage Gun Should I Buy?

Bob and Brad Options

I think the hardest part with the Bob and Brad lineup all together, is that they offer a staggering amount of massage gun options, even more than they did just a year ago. And the descriptions don’t help, as they all talk about being the “most powerful” and “portable” options, with brush less motors, multiple attachments, and more. And worse? The prices are all pretty close… with three of them being within $60 of each other.

And if you search on Amazon for Massage Gun, you are going to get a downright ABSURD amount of options from hundreds if not thousands of companies. There is no single human being who could ever compare all of them, so at the end of the day you just have to choose based on some random weirdos feedback on the internet.

Considering my first massage gun lasted a good 3.5 years of constant use, I’d hate to pick one that wasn’t something close to the RIGHT choice for me.

I would assume that most people fall into one of three categories.

If you are a big dude like me and there just isn’t such a thing as TOO much power. Check out the Bob and Brad D6 Pro Massage Gun. You can use code BOBANDBRADD6 for 10% off and grab one here.

If you are a smaller athlete who likes massages but is fairly sensitive to them, and doesn’t like to be pounded like a steak but instead gently massaged into relaxation, then the C2 Massage Gun is a great choice. You can grab one here.

And if you fall somewhere in the middle, maybe you are a regular dude instead of a heavy powerlifter, or a bit thicker of a female (no judgement here). Then you likely want to grab the X6 Pro or X6 Pro MAX. You can grab the X6 Pro right here. And the X6 Pro Max right here. Snag 10% OFF w/ Code: BOBBRADX6E10

Wrap Up

Massage guns are a regular part of my routine. Just don’t forget that they aren’t something that solves all of life’s problems, and you’ll likely come out happy that you own one.
